A Design Conversation with Ken Carbone

A wise man once said, “To be creative means to be in love with life.” Here at The Bag, we can’t help but agree with that sentiment, and after recently witnessing the artistic force of nature that is Ken Carbone, renowned designer, there is no doubt he would agree as well. Last month at the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) we heard Ken Carbone speak about his true obsessions: art, music and design.

A little background

Ken Carbone started sharing his creative genius with us at a very young age. He is an artist, designer, musician, author, teacher and so much more. He founded Carbone Smolan Agency, a design and branding firm in New York City, and has had clients from Tiffany and Co. to the Musée du Louvre. When he isn’t being a creative genius, he enjoys playing his guitar loudly. (We got a private Carbone jam session. Be jealous.)

A design conversation

Creativity isn’t simply an innate ability to produce beautiful things. It springs from an array of different influences, from teachers and mentors to hobbies and daily activities (here’s to the urinals in the world). From his lively guitar performances of classic rock, blues and jazz to his impassioned plea for the continuation of daily drawing and journaling, it is evident so many different forces fuel Carbone’s genius.

A copywriter’s perspective

So how do we, as a creative team of writers and designers, take all of this inspiration and turn it into something productive? Easy. We continue to put ourselves into our art, from words to design. We continue to be in love with life and compelled by curiosity. We journal, we seek out the beauty in everyday actions, and we find inspiration in everything around us. Every project with our clients is a chance for us to tell their stories in new and innovative ways. And events, like the one with Carbone, refill our creative cups and allow us to return to our day jobs with fresh eyes, renewed spirits and a drive to tell the best stories. And really, what more could we ask for?
